Research - Make Up
I designed a mood board on Word for all my make up ideas for my model/star. At the top of my mood board I placed the images where she will use strong and tidy make up to show how she is strong and in control. I feel these images would show of her good looks and make her look like a star, however we wanted her make up to fade off as the video went on to show the abuse that she has been through with her partner and how she is falling apart without him. We will use make up to create bruises on our model and will use eye drops to make it look like she is crying to create a dramatic effect and make the video show off her pain and upset. We have also decided to carry on the recording if it is raining on the filming day as this will add to the sorrow and upset.

Research - Locations (group)
Amy Johnson's Slidely by Slidely Slideshow
This location is on Grammar School Road in Brigg right at the end of the road. Indya showed Morgan and I this location as it had been considered for the video she was in last year. I believe this location would work for some of the video due to it being a large open space giving us a big area to work with. Also there is the sheltered part with the platform down the middle which could work as it will introduce different level's into the video and make it more interesting.

Research - Sara Bareilles- Gonna Get Over You 8
The establishing shot for this shows off the red of the car which is a representation of love and power which could suggest that she is a strong woman. Also a medium longshot is used when filming the car this suggests that the artist wants to show of shes driving and the car she is driving as it is an older model car which could work in cohesion with her dress code as she is dressed like someone from the 80's with the black leather and the quiff hairstyle.
Again like the first shot she is showing off her 80's style as we can see clearly now what clothes she is wearing. I have noticed that she is always center frame throughout the video which tells us that she is the main artists in the video. It also shows that she is wearing black which is a representation of mystery and is associated with power, which shows strong visual signs (Barthes)
This is a longshot of the pair entering the shop which could be classed as quite cheesy like some of the videos from the 80's as I researched the video and it is meant to be a mick take of Grease as the video was directed by Jonah Hill who is a comedian so the intention for it was meant to be funny as they are meant to be gangster type people dancing around in a supermarket.
In these 2 shots she is touching the woman and she falls to the ground and in the second shot she is getting up and she is wearing the same outfit as Sara. This could add to the comedy of the video as a middle aged woman is dressed in black leather and is dancing around like a teenager. This also gives the idea of costume changes as Sara's costume stays the same throughout the video but the other people around her are changing costumes. It could have the idea that Sara is giving the people around her strength and positivity, like she is bringing the store to life through her energy.
In this longshot she slides into camera to make it quite energetic and again cheesy. She is framed in this shot by the shelves with all the vegetables on as this could suggest that the video could be an advertisement to get people to eat healthier and it will give them lots of positive energy. I feel that another reason that the vegetables are there as it adds colour and a sense of realism to the video as it looks like people are just shopping like everyday shoppers in the background.
This close up shot of her at the counter uses diegetic sound from the bell as she hits it and it rings in the song. This could represent the mood that she is in and how she is just fooling around and is having fun with her freedom now she has split up with her ex.
In this close up she uses a pull focus of her as she is center frame and the rest are behind her stood in a formation. This is quite common in her videos as she uses it in her music video for 'Brave' as I feel that she is trying hard to express her emotions and is showing people that she has people behind her to back her up.
A tracking shot is used to show her walking towards the camera and and away from it. I feel that this is done to show of her confidence as she is walking away from the people to show she can cope by herself. She has been framed by the shopping isles, as the shelves closing her in and making her center frame so she is the thing to focus on. This also could follow the theory of Winship 'the gaze' as in this part of the video she gazes into the camera trying to show off her strong use of make up to make her look pretty and the use of black around her eyes to make her look tough and strong.
This longshot is used to show them dancing down the isle with the bright colours bursting off the shelves to represent the bright and cheery mood to the music video. It could be used to create a party atmosphere like she is celebrating that she is single and the freedom that she now has. This could follow the the theory of Goodwin 'performance, narrative and concept' as this is purely a video based around her performing and singing into camera.
This close up shot is different to the rest of the shots as usually she is center frame but in this shot the camera pans around to show everyone else's enjoyment. Also the shot is under cranked which is quite stereotypical in party type music videos as it shows the confetti flying around and the emotion on peoples faces to show that they are having a good time.
In this longshot of her you can see she has gone through a costume change which is to a more modern style of clothing. The music has stopped and it has just left her singing and dancing by herself in the store which suggests that the video was like a fantasy and all in her imagination of her having a good time. This also adds to the comedic effect to the video as she is making herself look silly because she is singing solo and slightly out of tune like a school girl in her room.
It then shows the guard coming to sort her out and take her out of the store. There are subtitles to show what he is saying to her as he is speaking a different language, which could suggest that she is in a foreign country enjoying herself.
How this has influenced my ideas and planning
- I like the idea of people getting involved in the video when she touches them
- I like the use of a pull focus on her
- I like the use of comedy used in the video
- I like the use of over cranking in the video as it highlights the fun that they are having
- I like the use of close ups when she is looking into camera to really show off her make up

Planning -Words to describe our video
We thought these words were appropriate for our music video as it is about an abusive relationship and one of the ideas we had for our video was having a close up of bruises on her arms and have the words coming off them as the words could have meanings behind the bruises.
Planning - Colour and prop ideas for music video
morgan bullock's Slidely by Slidely Slideshow
As our music video is going to be based around abuse and love which gave us the inspiration behind the colours, as black is a representation of sadness and evil which will be shown through the clothing and the object colours. Red is a sign of power and love to represent the love she once had for her partner but now is fading away. The colour grey will be used to represent how nothing is going well and everything is negative and not right. We chose the colour purple to represent gloom and sad feelings to show how our star is feeling throughout the video by having different objects in this colours and maybe even her lipstick.
How this had influenced my ideas
- I like the colour grey to represent how her life is going down hill because of her partner
- I like the use of the colour red as we can use a few red objects and scatter them around
- I like the idea of using purple lipstick as red is quite stereotypical and conventional so I feel that it will make my video rather unique

Research - Establishing shots 7
Sia:- The Greatest
This opening zoom in shot is of a prison cell and there are bodies on the floor which suggests that the music video is quite dark and as there is not much colour or light in this video also suggests tat it is a dark video as all you can see is inside the cell to clearly show the audience what is inside. It starts with a longshot then as I said before turns into a zoom in shot before cutting to another sequence of the music video.
Ellie Goulding: Still Falling For You
The opening shot of this one uses the projector behind her to make her body look just like a dark figure and make her stand out centre frame. A medium longshot is used for this to capture her upper body so you can see that it is her stood there. We would not be able to do this as advanced technology is used to create this that will be expensive and hard to come by .
Taylor Swift:- Blank Space
The establishing shot for this video is like the opening to a movie which is very popular with a modern day audience as it is quite similar to the James Bond movies hence the use of the old fashion car. You can also tell that it is like an opening sequence to a movie as there is a use of text to display the director like an opening sequence to a film.
Carly Rae Jepsen- I Really Like You
I like this establishing shot as there is a pull focus on the clock to show the time. The image relates to the lyrics as she sings about getting out of bed as it is like the start to the day like it is the start of the video. The model has a blue shirt on which is a stereotypical colour that is relatable to males.
Selena Gomez- Hands to myself
This establishing shot is different to the others it it opens with close up of the models face, which follows the theory of Winship 'the gaze' as she is looking straight into camera to show off her beauty and her strong use of make up. This has been edited to make her look spotless so it will immediately will engage the viewer.
For our music video we are planning on using a similar intro to Taylor Swifts 'Blank Space' video as we are planning on having our models acting out an argument to build up to the music video so the audience have an understanding of what the video is about.

- I like the use of an empty room to build up tension

Introducing actress: Sophie Scutt (Group post)
This is Sophie Scutt, and she is a seventeen year old student from Brigg. She is currently studying for her Alevels at Brigg Sixth Form. Sophie is very photogenic and also has a great passion for singing and acting, and has drama as one of her A-level courses.
Sophie has always had an interest in music and
preforming ever since a young age. She has
taken part in many productions including being
the narrator in Joseph And His Technicolored
Dream Coat, Cagebirds to Aldo Annie in
Oaklahoma.
Another good quality about Sophie is that she has a great visual appearance for our genre of indie pop. She has also agreed to help as much as she can for the preparation of her costume and to help us find things that will be perfect for the music video.
Sophie in my opinion is very talented at acting and singing which will be a huge benefit to our group as her performance will make our video more powerful and emotional to the viewer. I performed at Brigg Operatics with Sophie so I know how good her acting skills are and how she can make you feel what the emotion from the words and actions
We are going to create a star image for Sophie first by giving her a new name as we feel that this will make her more relatable to a teenage audience as it makes her more unique and gives her something that she is known as. We will promote her through creating a Facebook and MySpace page for her so people can follow her and get the latest updates for her. She will wear modern clothing to make her look quite stylish and again relate to a modern day audience.

Research - Sara Bareilles - Brave 6
The video starts with a close up shot where Sara looks like she is readjusting the camera, which could suggest that the video will be quite natural. It could also suggest that she has nobody operating the camera as it does not follow her or move as she walks backwards. This creates direct address with the audience as she knows that the camera is there and she starts off the video by looking into it.
This longshot of the mall could be again to give the audience the idea of how natural the music video is as it looks like a normal everyday photo of people in a mall. I feel that she is giving off the message that people should be themselves no matter where they are and don't let anybody else change who they are.
This is one of my favorite shots in the video as a group longshot is used to capture the group dancing in sync to the music like they are all coming together to express themselves. I feel that this shot would be useful in helping me create my music video as we are looking to use synchronized dancing in ours.
This medium longshot shows the emotion and passion that she is feeling from the song and I feel that the trees in the background are used to frame her and tell the audience that she is the star of the music video. Also I think that the bright and vibrant colours from the trees represent the light hearted mood of the video.
This medium close up creates direct address with the audience as she is pointing and looking at the camera. I feel that the reason behind this is to connect with the audience and tell them that they need to be 'brave' and express themselves and don't hold back.
I chose this medium close up as I noticed that her shirt had changed from a black shirt with white dots, to a white shirt with black dots. However her trousers have stayed the same. This stays the same until the camera cuts back to her stood between the trees where her shirt is black again. I feel that this works in cohesion with the lyrics when she says "One of these days you could let the light in" which could be why she has changed her shirt from black to white which could suggest that she wants to be let in.
In this group shot there is a pull focus on the star to make her stand out from the rest of the people behind her, as they are slightly blurred. They use a tracking back shot used when she is walking towards the camera while singing into it which creates direct address with the audience as she is also looking directly at the camera.
How this affected my ideas and planning
- I like the idea of the group synchronized dancing
- I like the idea of her clothes changing to work in cohesion with the lyrics
- I like the use of a natural video

Change in group members
After our AS results day Amy Jacklin decided she was dropping media. She felt that she would benefit more from continuing a different subject as it will benefit her more when she goes to University. Following this we gained another group member, Indya has joined media and has joined our group. Indya is going to be an asset to our group due to taking part in her friends music video last year so she will be very useful in helping us conduct our planning and production for our music video. We also feel that Indya is a very dedicated student who will help us and benefit us in any task that we carry out.
